Final Expense Insurance

Final expense is a smaller-face whole life policy specifically designed to cover end-of-life costs: funeral and burial expenses, outstanding medical bills, and any immediate debts your family would otherwise have to settle out-of-pocket.

Most final expense policies carry a lifetime guaranteed level premium and a face amount typically between $5,000 and $50,000. Because the amount is modest, the application is short and typically asks health questions only — no paramedical exam.

There are two broad underwriting classes. Immediate-benefit policies pay the full death benefit from day one. Guaranteed-issue or modified-benefit policies have a graded period (often two years) during which only premiums-plus-interest are returned for non-accidental death; the full benefit kicks in after the graded period. We quote both so you can see the trade-off.

Final expense is permanent whole life: coverage is for life as long as premiums are paid, and the policy builds a modest guaranteed cash value. It is designed as protection, not as a savings or retirement vehicle.

Who it typically fits

  • Older adults who want to ensure final costs are not left to family.
  • People with health conditions that complicate full-size life applications.
  • Clients who want level premium for life with no medical exam.
  • Anyone looking to pre-fund funeral and burial costs so family doesn't need to.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a medical exam?+
No paramedical exam is required for final expense. Carriers ask a short list of health questions on the application and reference prescription-history databases.
What is a graded benefit?+
If you qualify only for a modified-benefit or guaranteed-issue policy, the full death benefit may be paid only after a graded period (typically two years). Before that, non-accidental death pays premiums plus interest. Accidental death is typically covered from day one.
How much coverage can I get?+
Typical face amounts range from $5,000 to $50,000. We help you size it against actual expected funeral, burial, and outstanding-debt costs rather than guessing.
Can I be turned down?+
Some fully-underwritten final expense policies can decline for serious conditions. Guaranteed-issue policies cannot decline for health, but have the graded-benefit structure described above.
